Sustainability is Key to Our Business

We are committed to fostering a robust culture of sustainability across our businesses. Our goal is to establish an energetic and results-oriented workplace, set an exemplary standard for environmental practices, and be a role model in contributing to our communities. As we progress, our sustainability agenda is poised to gain stronger traction across the Group.

As we reflect on the profound journey of the past five decades, our excitement for the possibilities ahead is equally palpable. With our eyes fixed firmly on the horizon, we remain dedicated to the principles of excellence, sustainability, and transformation that have defined our vision. Through our focused efforts in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), and operational strategies, we are poised to remain a force to be reckoned with in our industry for the next 50 years and beyond.

To achieve this dream, we are championing several initiatives:

  • Circular Economy: We are implementing practices that minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency.
  • Social Responsibility: Our labor practices adhere to strict local and international standards, ensuring fair treatment and working conditions for our employees. We foster a culture of diversity, inclusion, and respect for human rights, while also promoting career development and community engagement.
  • Governance: We are committed to ethical business practices, risk mitigation, and transparency. Our anti-bribery and anti corruption policies are robust, and we have strengthened our management accountability and risk management capabilities. We have conducted thorough financial reviews to identify areas for improvement and have implemented measures to enhance legal compliance, contract management, and risk assessment.

As we move forward, we envision Cahya Mata and the Group continuing on a sustainable growth trajectory. We aim to achieve long-term sustainable revenue and profitability growth while maintaining our reputation as a professional and stable organization. By exceeding expectations and fulfilling our responsibilities, we will uphold our legacy of financial success and sustainable development.

Goal 3

In FY2024, the Group successfully met its KPI of achieving zero (0) work-related fatalities. This was also achieved in FY2023 and FY2022, outlining our commitment to maintaining the health and safety of all our employees.

Goal 4

We have established our own scholarship programme to award scholarships to 30 of the best Sarawakian students, enabling them to pursue their bachelor’s degrees at various universities across Malaysia. In FY2024, we introduced a monthly gathering for our employees, designed to boost productivity, improve retention, and elevate overall workplace morale.

Goal 5

Cahya Mata has successfully achieved the targeted 30% female representation on our Board, aligning with the guidelines of the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance (“MCCG”) 2021. With 3 of our 8 directors being women, we are committed to sustaining this balance, reflecting our dedication to diversity and inclusion at the leadership level.

Goal 6

Within the Cement and Construction SBUs, rainwater harvesting systems have been installed across our operating sites such as Pending Plant, where up to 20,000 litres of rainwater is collected at a time and used towards general use and cleaning purposes. In 2024, the amount of collected rainwater through this system totalled 547,577 litres.

Goal 7

Our Cement SBU has upgraded the induction motor at the Water Pump House in the Mambong facility to an Ecomoto, a MyHijau-certified green motor. Solar panels were installed at the Mambong facility with a total capacity of 43.2 kWp. Our Property and Construction SBU have upgraded to energy-efficient LED lighting at its operations, further enhancing energy savings.

Cahya Mata actively demonstrated resilience by optimising resource allocation, business model enhancements, standardising processes and leveraging technology for product innovations.

Goal 9

Cahya Mata Alam, under the Environmental Technology SBU, invests in R&D to create products from recovered and recycled materials. Among them is Thermasite™, a sustainable timber alternative made from rice husk, plastics, tyres, and other biodegradable waste.

Goal 10

At Cahya Mata, our Group Whistleblowing Policy enables stakeholders to raise form al confidential reports on any potential incidents of discrimination such as race and gender bias, sexual orientation, or other forms of violations associated with our Group policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Goal 11

To elevate Malaysia’s sporting potential, we provide support for international training in Australia and New Zealand and have hosted clinics with top Cuban coaches, including Olympic medalist Yuniaka Crawford Rojer.

Goal 12

Our Road Maintenance SBU prioritizes the usage of locally-sourced materials – including soil, aggregates, and premix in our road maintenance works. We are also leveraging synergies across multiple operations – Wires, SEDC Premix, Concrete and Cement, to achieve economies of scale in the supply of conventional materials and new product offerings.

Goal 13

Phosphate slag, a by-product of phosphorus production in the phosphate manufacturing process that is classified as scheduled waste, has been utilised by Cement SBU as raw materials to replace Metatonolite in the cement production. Our Road Maintenance SBU reclaimed asphalt from deteriorating roads, processing it into new materials for pothole repairs, road shoulder construction, and small-scale paving projects.

Goal 15

Guided by our commitment to preserving and restoring our local ecosystems, we partnered with Forest Department Sarawak to organise a tree planting programme. This initiative aims to rehabilitate the forest and natural habitats, ultimately enhancing biodiversity while also reducing carbon and greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

Goal 16

The Board of Directors and Group Managing Director (GMD) set the foundation for ethical conduct, overseeing the implementation of anti-bribery and corruption policies across the Group and its SBUs. The Group Compliance Function, reporting to the GMD, supports by executing these policies, monitoring compliance, and delivering regular training and awareness programmes.

Goal 17

At Cahya Mata, we drive long-term value creation by investing in Malaysian athletics, empowering talent, and strengthening communities. One of the key developments is a three (3) year sponsorship agreement with the Malaysian Athletics Federation (“MAF”) from 2023-2025 amounting to RM5 million, enabling MAF to strategically implement the programme.

Board of Directors

At Cahya Mata, our Board of Directors plays a hands on role in guiding our sustainability journey. They set the direction, review key strategies and targets, and ensure that sustainability and climate considerations are built into every major decisions we make. The board also champions strong governance, transparency, and integrity while keeping an open line of communication with our stakeholders. By staying informed on the latest ESG and climate developments, they help ensure we create long-term value for both our business and the communities we serve.

Group Sustainability Committee

The Group Sustainability Committee plays a key role in bringing Cahya Mata’s sustainability vision to life. They help ensure ESGs principles are embedded in our business strategy, guiding our goals and driving meaningful progress. The committee keeps the Board updated on key developments, fosters collaborations and partnerships, and champions a strong sustainability culture across the organisation. Through their leadership, we stay focused in creating positive impact for our people, business and planet.

Senior Management Team

Our Senior Management Team, led by our Group Managing Director, drives the execution of Cahya Mata’s ESG strategies across the organisation. They provide strong leadership to ensure sustainability initiatives are effectively integrated into our business operations and aligned with our corporate goals. The team tracks progress, manages key sustainability and climate-related risks, and keeps the Group Sustainability Committee updated on developments. Through their hands-on approach, they turn our sustainability vision into real, measurable action.

Group ESG Team

The Group ESG team turns Cahya Mata’s sustainability vision into action by developing clear strategies, policies, and framework that guide our efforts across all business units. They provide technical expertise, training and tools to ensure consistent and effective implementation of ESG initiatives. The team also tracks performance, manages reporting and compliance, and fosters collaboration to drive continuous improvement and innovation. By connecting our people, leaders, and stakeholders, they help make sustainability a shared responsibility across the organisation.

ESG Taskforce

The ESG Taskforce brings Cahya Mata’s sustainability plan to life on the ground. Made up of representatives from various operations and functions, the team drives implementation, monitor progress, and ensures sustainability is embedded in daily business activities. They identify and manage sustainability-related risk and opportunities while promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing across departments. Through their hands-on efforts, the Taskforce helps turn our sustainability goals into real impact across the organisation.
